Markets are once again hanging on a decision from Washington, and the consequences could reach Americans far beyond the battlefield.
President Donald Trump says he is nearing a major decision on whether to sharply escalate the Iran war or pursue another path toward ending it.
For households, the immediate risk is energy. Oil remains above $100 a barrel, gasoline is nearing $4.50 nationally, and another escalation could push inflation, borrowing costs and mortgage rates higher again.
Here’s what matters now.
What Is Trump Deciding on Iran?
Trump told Axios he is at a “critical juncture” and is weighing whether to restart large-scale attacks on Iran.
The decision comes ahead of a meeting with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman, whose energy infrastructure could be exposed to a wider conflict.
No final decision has been announced, and Trump says he wants to hear from Gulf allies first.
Could Ground Forces or Pickaxe Mountain Be Next?
One of the hardest military questions is Pickaxe Mountain, a deeply buried nuclear-linked site near Natanz.
Satellite analysis suggests the complex is protected by substantial rock, while other assessments put parts of the facility roughly 80 to 100 metres underground. That has raised doubts over whether America’s largest conventional bunker-buster bombs could fully destroy it.
Earlier U.S. planning has included limited ground operations to secure enriched uranium or seize strategic territory, rather than a full-scale invasion.
A mission against Pickaxe Mountain could be far more dangerous and logistically difficult.
There is no public indication that Trump is currently considering a tactical nuclear weapon. Credible reporting on the options has focused on conventional airstrikes, limited ground operations and diplomacy.
Why Are Oil Markets Watching So Closely?
Iran sits beside the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important energy routes, while Saudi infrastructure has already been hit.
Oil remains volatile, with Brent around $104 a barrel and U.S. crude near $103 on Friday as traders weighed supply risks against hopes that damaged Saudi pipeline capacity could return.
For Americans, the impact is already visible. AAA says regular gasoline is averaging about $4.47 a gallon today, more than $1 above a year ago.
Diesel has climbed above $6, raising costs for trucking, farming and construction. Those costs can eventually feed into groceries and other everyday goods.
Higher energy prices can also keep inflation elevated, giving the Federal Reserve more reason to keep rates high or raise them again. Mortgage rates are already around 7%.
The Next Decision Could Reach Your Wallet Fast
