One AI company just agreed to spend $115 billion betting the boom keeps going, while OpenAI trimmed its own fundraising goal by a third.
It is a lot to keep up with, so we have picked the three AI stories most likely to touch your portfolio and your future, including a warning from Microsoft’s AI chief about the one thing he says nobody should build.
Let’s start with the $115 billion bet.
What Is the Marvell and Lumentum Deal? A $115 Billion AI Chip Bet
AI’s next bottleneck is moving data between chips, and Marvell just paid a fortune to own part of the answer.
Marvell is buying Lumentum in an all-stock deal valued at $115 billion, with Lumentum’s shareholders getting 4.5 Marvell shares for each of theirs, a premium of about 24%.
Lumentum makes the lasers that move data through AI data centres as light instead of copper wire, and Marvell, which helps Amazon and Google build custom AI chips, wants to own that supply and take on Broadcom.
Marvell’s shares have fallen about 22% since the talks leaked in a broad chip selloff, so the deal is a test of whether investors still trust the AI buildout, which matters if chips sit inside your 401(k).
It is among the boldest bets yet that AI demand will keep outrunning supply.
Why Does Microsoft’s AI Chief Warn Against Building Conscious AI?
While Marvell bets on faster AI, Microsoft’s AI chief is drawing a line on how far AI should go.
Mustafa Suleyman said on Sunday that today’s AI is not conscious and cannot suffer, and that developers must make sure it stays that way.
If signs of consciousness appeared in training, he would call for everyone to stop until they could be designed out, and any evidence should be made public.
He argues a conscious machine would be a “new digital species” that could develop its own needs and compete with people for energy, computing power and money.
For anyone who chats with AI as if it were a person, one of its biggest builders is saying plainly that it is not, and should not become one.
It is a rare case of an AI executive asking the industry to hold back.
Why Did OpenAI Cut Its Funding Goal to $20 Billion?
Two weeks ago OpenAI was racing to raise $30 billion, and the mood has changed.
OpenAI has cut its target to about $20 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, down from $30 billion at $1.4 trillion, after some investors trimmed what they would put in.
Only about $11 billion was committed by Friday’s deadline, and wealthy individuals will get a later chance to buy in at the same price.
It lands after the Nasdaq 100 fell about 10% in three weeks from its October 6 record, and weeks before Anthropic’s expected stock market debut.
Other AI start-ups will now be measured against OpenAI’s lower price, and if you hold an index fund, the AI valuations inside it are being repriced too.
Even the most in-demand name in AI has to negotiate now.
AI Stocks Are Being Repriced. So Is Everything Else You Own.
Chip stocks, AI start-ups and even OpenAI are being repriced in real time, and the same shift is quietly reaching your savings, your mortgage and your investments.
A Treasury bill now pays about 4% while the average savings account pays less than 1%. For years, holding things that pay nothing cost you nothing. That has quietly flipped, and most people haven’t noticed yet.
