Around 75 million Americans are about to learn how much bigger their monthly payment gets next year, and for millions of households that number is the difference between a comfortable 2027 and a tight one.
The latest inflation data points to a Social Security cost-of-living adjustment of 3.5% to 3.6%, which would be the largest increase in three years and a clear step up from the 2.8% paid out this year.
On the average retired worker's benefit of $2,071 a month, that works out to roughly $72 more.
The catch is that part of that raise is already spoken for.
How Big Will the 2027 Social Security Raise Be?
AARP now projects 3.6%, while the Senior Citizens League has settled on 3.5% in its final forecast before the official figure lands, and independent analyst Mary Johnson has arrived at the same number.
Nobody decides this figure, it is simply calculated.
Social Security compares average prices in July, August and September against the same three months a year earlier, using an inflation measure built around how wage earners actually spend.
Two of those three months are now in, which is why the estimates have stopped moving.
Why You Will Not See the Full Raise
Medicare Part B premiums come straight out of your payment before it ever reaches your bank.
That premium is $202.90 today, and the latest projection puts it at $209.50 next year, which removes about $6.60 from a $72 raise before you have spent a cent of it.
The final figure is confirmed in November, and several forecasters expect it to come in higher still.
When Is the 2027 COLA Announced?
September's inflation report is the last piece of the calculation, and the Social Security Administration announces the official number on October 14.
A hot September reading pushes it up, a cool one pulls it down, and energy prices will decide which.
Notices go out in December, and the money lands with January's payment.
A 3.5% Raise Cannot Keep Up With What Is Coming
A COLA is a rear-view mirror. It compensates you for last year's prices and leaves you exposed to next year's.
At the same time, trillions of dollars are moving into a handful of technologies set to reshape the cost of energy, healthcare and labour, which are the three things that quietly decide what a retirement income is really worth.
That is what The $5 Trillion Signal covers.
It is a free report on the five technologies drawing that money, the investment themes forming around them, and the signals worth watching now.
