Inflation is refusing to disappear quietly.

August CPI held at 3.4%, but prices rose 0.4% in a single month, gasoline is climbing again, and the 10-year Treasury yield remains close to 5% as investors weigh another Federal Reserve rate hike.

Here’s the market news worth knowing today.

CPI Holds at 3.4% But Another Fed Rate Hike Might be Coming

The latest CPI report showed consumer prices rising 0.4% in August and 3.4% over the past year.

Core inflation rose 0.3% for the month, slightly hotter than expected, although the annual rate eased to 2.4%.

Gasoline alone rose 3.9% and accounted for more than a third of the monthly increase.

That leaves the Fed with a difficult choice next week: hold rates steady and risk inflation staying high, or hike again and make mortgages, loans and financing more expensive.

With the 10-year Treasury yield still near 5%, another hike could add fresh pressure to stocks, particularly highly valued growth companies.

Why Are Gas Prices Rising Again?

The energy problem is no longer just about Iran.

Saudi crude supply fell to a more than 30-year low in August after attacks on energy infrastructure, while Iran-backed Houthi forces expanded their control along Yemen’s Red Sea coast.

The Houthis have taken Perim Island near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, one of the world’s most important shipping chokepoints.

Smoke has also been seen near Saudi Arabia’s East-West oil pipeline, although Riyadh has not confirmed that the pipeline itself was struck.

For Americans, the risk is simple: disrupted oil flows can push up gasoline, diesel and shipping costs, feeding inflation just as the Fed considers raising rates.

Three Pressure Points Are Hitting Markets at Once

The risk for investors is the combination.

Higher energy costs can keep inflation elevated, which can keep interest rates higher and pressure stocks, housing and household budgets at the same time.
