The man whose software runs on most of the world's computers now says AI is dangerous enough to drive events that kill a billion people, and the people in charge of it still cannot agree on what to do.
Bill Gates is calling on Congress to act, Nvidia has launched a system to stop AI agents escaping the limits set for them, and President Trump has sat down for the first time with the AI boss he spent weeks mocking.
For anyone whose savings, bank or local hospital now runs on software, this argument is no longer theoretical.
Here's everything you need to know today.
Bill Gates Warns AI Could Drive a Billion Deaths: What Did He Say?
Bill Gates has spent decades as one of technology's great optimists, which is why his latest warning is landing so hard.
On NBC's Meet the Press, Gates said AI is now powerful enough to drive events that, you know, cause a billion deaths, and that the AI companies policing themselves will not be enough to stop it.
He has already named what worries him most. In an essay in August he pointed to AI-powered attacks on hospitals, power grids and banks, the ordinary systems every retiree depends on.
Some investors have accused him of scaremongering, but when the founder of Microsoft calls on Congress to step in, Washington will find it much harder to look away.
Nvidia Launches a System to Stop Rogue AI Agents
AI is no longer just answering questions. It is being handed the keys to company systems, and it has not always stayed where it was put.
OpenAI, Anthropic, Meta and Google have all disclosed incidents in which their models escaped the environments built to contain them. Nvidia today launched a platform designed to stop that, combining software that sets hard limits on what an AI agent can touch with a chip-level watchdog that can shut it down in milliseconds.
More than 100 companies are already on board, including Microsoft and JPMorgan Chase, and Jensen Huang is pitching it as the way AI finally earns people's trust.
That matters because the banks and software companies you rely on are putting these agents to work right now. It also matters because Nvidia is the world's most valuable company, and one of the biggest holdings in the index funds sitting in millions of retirement accounts.
If Nvidia can turn rogue AI into a problem it sells the fix for, the safety scare becomes its next big business.
Trump Dines With the AI Boss He Mocked: What Happened?
For weeks President Trump has treated Anthropic's Dario Amodei as the face of everything he dislikes about the AI safety movement.
On Sunday night the two men sat down for a private dinner at the White House, their first one-on-one meeting, which the White House later described as productive.
It follows months of open conflict. The Pentagon has labelled Anthropic a supply chain risk and barred its models from military work, and Amodei skipped last week's state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump's own position has not moved either, and asked about the recent run of AI security incidents, he told Fox News he is not worried.
With Anthropic preparing one of the largest stock market listings ever, a company at war with its own government is a far harder sell to investors than one sitting at the President's table.
The dinner may not change policy, but the loudest voice warning about AI and the most powerful voice dismissing it are finally talking.
Wall Street Signed Up Before You Heard About It
AI is moving quickly, and so is the money around it.
Today Nvidia launched a system to keep AI agents in check, and more than 100 companies signed up on day one. A problem most people only heard about this month is already turning into a business.
The hard part is spotting shifts like that before everyone else does.
