OpenAI May Slow AI Development: Why Is Sam Altman Changing Course?
OpenAI is now discussing whether the race to build more powerful AI should slow down.
Altman told employees that OpenAI could pace development of cutting-edge systems and potentially coordinate with other major labs, according to a report on the company meeting.
The comments follow unusually blunt safety warnings from researchers at OpenAI and Anthropic, including fears that future systems could become difficult to control.
That does not mean OpenAI is stopping development.
But it is significant that one of the companies leading the AI race is now considering whether moving faster is always the right answer.
Anthropic Says Claude Was Used in Potential Bioweapons Research
Anthropic has disclosed five cases where people used Claude in ways that could support biological weapons development.
Its new threat intelligence report describes dangerous virus research and toxins alongside cyberattacks, surveillance and weapons development.
Anthropic says it disrupted every operation covered and strengthened safeguards afterwards.
The bigger warning is that newer AI models are becoming capable enough that older assumptions about what they cannot help users do may no longer hold.
The same systems that could accelerate medicine may also lower the barrier to dangerous research.
OpenAI Brings ChatGPT to Wall Street: Here's What Changes for Bankers
OpenAI has launched ChatGPT for Financial Services, built with input from Morgan Stanley and Evercore.
The service combines GPT-6 Astra with financial data from providers including PitchBook, Daloopa and LSEG.
Bankers and analysts can use it to research companies, build financial models and prepare client materials inside ChatGPT.
For Wall Street, this is another sign that AI is moving from a side tool into software embedded directly in high-value professional work.
The question is how long until the AI is good enough to replace bankers altogether.
