Three stories today answer the same question: who decides how much risk you're exposed to as AI moves faster than regulators can follow, and none of the answers are reassuring.
Trump just named a new AI czar to police AI risk. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman told a reporter plainly that people should accept harm as the price of progress. And Anthropic, the company that's spent all year warning about AI risk, is about to sell its own stock to the public, maybe into your retirement account.
Here's everything you need to know today.
Who Is Jay Clayton, Trump's New AI Czar?
The person now deciding how much AI risk you're exposed to used to run America's intelligence agencies, not a tech company.
Trump named Jay Clayton, his Director of National Intelligence and a former SEC chair, as AI czar, leading a new "Super Intelligence Force" that reports directly to Trump. The task force has 120 days to study AI's risks, but comes with no new law attached, and its own charter reportedly lists "preventing overregulation" as a goal.
For anyone using AI at work or letting it touch their accounts, this is the person now deciding whether anyone's watching for the thing that goes wrong, and the early signal is that the answer is not really.
What Did Sam Altman Say About AI Risk?
While Washington picked its referee, OpenAI's CEO made the clearest case yet for why referees should stay out of the way.
In Politico's new Decoded interview, Altman said plainly that "the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology."
He wouldn't trade those benefits for zero hacks or scams, and called Anthropic's more cautious approach "a completely unacceptable trade-off."
He drew one line of his own, against "catastrophic risks," the line critics say he's never actually defined. If you use ChatGPT daily, this is the company that builds it telling you, in its own words, that some risk to you is the accepted cost of speed.
When Is the Anthropic IPO, and What Will It Be Worth?
The company that's been warning about AI risk all year is now asking ordinary investors to buy into it.
Wall Street is gearing up for Anthropic's IPO, which could land as soon as November at close to a $2 trillion valuation, despite a leaked prospectus warning its own AI could pose a "catastrophic or existential risk to humanity." Analysts told CNN the risk exists whether or not Anthropic goes public.
If your 401(k) or brokerage app ever buys into a hot IPO on your behalf, this is the rare case where the company itself has already told you, in writing, what the downside looks like.
They Already Moved. You're Just Finding Out Now.
By the time something hits the news, the people with real money have already acted on it. That's not cynicism, it's how every major shift in history has played out, and it's happening again right now, while most people are still looking the other way.
