AI may be entering one of its most important phases yet.
Today’s biggest stories show the race accelerating on almost every front, with Nvidia building a trillion-parameter model, billions pouring into AI computing infrastructure, and a new startup raising more than $1 billion to challenge the way companies use AI.
The message is becoming increasingly clear: the AI boom is getting bigger, more expensive, and far more competitive.
Here's what you need to know...
Nvidia Is Building a 1-Trillion-Parameter AI Model
Nvidia is no longer content with simply supplying the chips behind the AI boom.
The company is developing Nemotron 4, a new family of AI models designed to compete with some of the world’s leading open models.
The largest version is expected to contain at least one trillion parameters. Nvidia has confirmed it is working on Nemotron 4, although it has not confirmed all of the reported details.
Parameters are internal values an AI model learns during training.
Having more does not automatically make a model smarter, but a trillion-parameter model shows the enormous scale Nvidia is targeting.
The company also released Nemotron 3.5 Lightning this week, designed for tasks such as coding, using tools, and monitoring security alerts.
CoreWeave Plans to Spend Up to $39 Billion as AI Demand Surges
The amount of money flowing into AI infrastructure is becoming difficult to ignore.
AI cloud company CoreWeave increased its expected 2026 spending to between $35 billion and $39 billion after demand for its computing capacity continued to surge.
Its revenue backlog has now reached $104.2 billion, while the company says its near-term computing capacity is effectively sold out.
CoreWeave provides access to powerful computers packed with Nvidia chips for companies that need enormous amounts of processing power to run AI.
Its customers include Meta, Anthropic, Microsoft, and Caterpillar.
This helps explain why building the physical infrastructure behind AI has become one of the biggest investment stories in technology.
XAI Co-Founder Raises $1.1 Billion for a New AI Startup
Another enormous AI company may be starting to emerge.
River AI, founded by former xAI co-founder Igor Babuschkin, has raised $1.1 billion from investors including General Catalyst, Nvidia, AMD Ventures, Y Combinator, and Temasek.
The company is betting that businesses will increasingly want AI models customized around their own data instead of relying entirely on general-purpose systems from companies such as OpenAI.
River AI says its technology can help businesses customize open AI models without needing their own large infrastructure teams.
That could become increasingly important as companies look for cheaper AI systems they can control themselves.
IBM and Together AI Sign $240 Million Nvidia Deal
AI companies still need somewhere to run all of these models.
IBM and Together AI have signed a $240 million agreement to build a large AI computing system on IBM Cloud using Nvidia hardware.
The first stage will contain around 2,000 Nvidia Blackwell 300 chips.
Together AI expects the capacity could be fully booked months before it even becomes available.
The system will primarily help companies run open AI models such as DeepSeek, MiniMax, and Kimi.
If AI Spending Is Exploding, Where Does the Money Go Next?
Billions of dollars are flowing into chips, data centers, cloud computing, power and the infrastructure needed to keep AI growing.
And if this spending wave is only getting started, the biggest opportunities may not be the companies making headlines today.
They could be the technologies and industries positioned to benefit from what comes next.
