GoPro has gone from forgotten camera stock to one of Wall Street’s hottest names in barely 48 hours.
Shares have more than doubled after YouTube star Markiplier emerged as a major shareholder, before GoPro announced a $285 million merger that could push the company far beyond action cameras and into AI data centers.
The rally is spectacular. But for a company that has spent years shrinking, the real question is whether GoPro has finally found its second act.
Why Is GoPro Stock Up Today?
GoPro stock surged as much as 78% on Tuesday, after already jumping 46% on Monday to $0.88.
At one point, shares had gained more than 170% from Friday’s levels, bringing a stock that traded near $0.60 last week back above $1.50.
The newest catalyst is GoPro’s $285 million deal with Starman Optical.
GoPro shareholders are expected to receive around $1.14 per share in cash while retaining roughly 10% of the combined company. GoPro’s approximately $92 million of debt is also expected to be repaid when the transaction closes.
More importantly, Starman makes optical technology used to move enormous amounts of information through AI data centers.
That could transform GoPro from a struggling consumer-camera business into a company with exposure to AI infrastructure, defense and aerospace.
Markiplier GoPro Stock: Why Did He Buy 13.5 Million Shares?
The rally actually began before the merger was announced.
Mark Fischbach, better known to his millions of YouTube followers as Markiplier, disclosed ownership of 13.5 million GoPro shares, representing 8.5% of its Class A stock.
He has described GoPro as undervalued and recently praised its new MISSION 1 professional camera, saying he plans to use the technology in future filmmaking projects.
That matters because this is not simply a celebrity endorsement.
Markiplier has built his career around cameras and filmmaking, making his multimillion-dollar investment unusually closely connected to the product itself.
Is GoPro Stock Actually Making a Comeback?
The excitement is real, but GoPro’s underlying business still has plenty to prove.
Second-quarter revenue fell 31% to $105 million, while camera sales dropped 38% and the company recorded a $51 million net loss.
That is why the Starman deal matters so much.
GoPro is not simply hoping another camera becomes a hit. It could gain a completely new growth engine tied to the enormous spending boom around AI infrastructure.
For investors, that makes the next chapter much more interesting than the share-price spike alone.
