Elon Musk’s AI company defied a subpoena to attend a hearing on AI safety, and today it has to tell New York lawmakers what stops its technology from hurting people.
AI news moves fast, so we have picked the three stories that matter most for your money, your security and your family: that hearing, a stock slide that has investors asking who pays for the AI boom, and China’s plan to fence off its AI.
Let’s start in New York, where four rival AI companies struggled to answer the same questions last week.
SpaceX Testifies on AI Safety in New York: What Do Lawmakers Want to Know?
Of the five AI giants New York invited, only Musk’s refused to show up.
SpaceXAI, the Grok maker formed when SpaceX merged with xAI, was subpoenaed on September 28 and skipped the council’s 10-hour hearing on October 5, agreeing to appear only after the council threatened court action.
Today at 10 a.m. ET, government affairs manager Gabriela Castillo Madrid answers questions by video on user data, safeguards and whistleblowers, while the council weighs 10 AI bills, including one requiring a way for humans to shut AI models down.
Last week, four rival AI companies would not put a number on the worst-case risk, so for anyone who uses a chatbot, today’s answers show how seriously Musk’s company takes your safety.
Whatever it says, Musk’s company is now on the record.
Why Is CoreWeave Stock Crashing? AI’s Debt Problem Explained
While lawmakers debate AI’s dangers, Wall Street is asking a simpler question: who is paying for it?
CoreWeave, which rents out AI computing power, lost about 20% of its value in three days as its roughly $50 billion of debt came under scrutiny. The cost of insuring its bonds against default hit a record on Thursday, and that market now prices a better than 60% chance of default within five years.
Nvidia, one of the biggest holdings in most index funds, put $2 billion into CoreWeave in January, and CEO Jensen Huang says he is optimistic.
Investors are now asking whether the AI boom’s borrowers can keep paying, and the answer matters well beyond one stock.
Why Is China Restricting AI Exports? 40 Technologies Are on the List
The world’s two AI superpowers are now both building walls.
China has proposed restricting or banning exports of 40 technologies, 23 of them in AI, plus chips, solar power and gene therapy. AI models trained on sensitive national data would be banned, and models above 2 trillion parameters, a measure of size, could be restricted.
The US has spent years blocking China’s access to top chips, and now China is setting limits of its own, which could ripple into the software and solar panels many Americans use.
It comes as the two countries make progress on AI safety talks, so competition and cooperation are happening at once.
Governments Are Building Walls Around AI. The Money Is Already Choosing Sides.
Lawmakers called in Musk’s AI company, a $50 billion debt pile hammered one stock, and China started fencing off its AI, all this week, and by the time a shift like this feels obvious, the early money has usually already moved.
That is why we created The $5 Trillion Signal, a free report that shows you, in plain English, the five technologies where serious money is flowing right now, who is backing each one, and the early signals worth watching before the crowd catches on.
