Two of the world’s most valuable companies just made their boldest AI moves of the year, and both are aimed at the giants that have dominated the boom so far.
AI news moves so fast that it is easy to miss what actually matters, so we have picked out the biggest stories for your money, your work and your family, and put them in one place.
First, Mark Zuckerberg’s answer to ChatGPT.
Meta’s Muse Wonder: Zuckerberg’s New AI Takes On ChatGPT and Claude
Mark Zuckerberg has spent more than a year and billions of dollars rebuilding Meta’s AI team, and today he showed what that money bought.
Meta released Muse Wonder, which it says matches OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude at coding and at working through financial and legal questions. It is built to work like an assistant that gets things done, remembering context and sticking with long, complicated tasks, and is available now to developers and subscribers of Meta’s Muse Code service.
Those claims come from Meta itself and have not yet been independently tested, and the company has been caught overselling before, admitting it used specially tuned versions of its Llama 4 model to boost benchmark scores.
For the billions of people who use Facebook, Instagram and WhatsApp, this could be the AI that eventually sits inside the apps they open every day, and Meta says it plans to bring Wonder to its Muse assistant, starting with paying subscribers.
If it lives up to the billing, the AI race just gained a serious contender with a ready-made audience few rivals can match.
Microsoft’s New Maia 300 Chip Takes On Nvidia: What It Means for Your Money
Meta is racing to match the best AI models. Microsoft is going after something even more basic: the chips they run on.
For years, almost every major AI company has depended on Nvidia’s chips. Microsoft’s new Maia 300 is its biggest move yet to change that: the company says its third-generation chip produces 40% more AI output from the same electricity as leading graphics-chip systems, and it enters production in 2027 as the main engine behind Microsoft’s own AI services.
Investors noticed. Nvidia fell more than 1% and AMD about 2.6%, while Microsoft rose about 1%.
That matters well beyond Silicon Valley. Nvidia is one of the biggest holdings in most index funds and often earns half or more of its revenue from a few giant cloud companies, so when one of its best customers builds an alternative, millions of retirement accounts have a stake in it.
Microsoft will still use Nvidia to train its models, so this is a shift rather than a clean break, but the biggest buyers clearly want more control over the cost of AI.
The Giants Are Moving Fast. The Early Money Usually Moves Faster.
In a single day, Meta took aim at ChatGPT and Microsoft took aim at Nvidia, and moments like this are often when the next big winners quietly take shape. By the time it feels obvious to everyone, the early money has usually already moved.
