While AI stocks wobbled again, the companies that make everything from sticky notes to stealth bombers carried the Dow up about 600 points this morning.

Meanwhile oil is back above $100 as Iran threatens the undersea cables that carry the world’s internet, and interest on the national debt now costs more than the defence budget.

There is a lot to sort through today, so here are the three developments that matter most for your portfolio, your gas tank and your taxes, starting with the unlikely heroes of the morning.

Why Is the Dow Jumping 600 Points Today? Earnings Beat Expectations

The AI trade is not the only game in town.

The Dow rose about 600 points as 3M jumped more than 4% after beating profit forecasts and raising its full-year outlook, while Northrop Grumman gained about 6% and RTX about 1% on their own earnings beats.

Chip stocks clawed back some ground too, with Micron, Intel and Sandisk up around 1% and CoreWeave up more than 2%.

For anyone whose 401(k) leans on tech, a good day for ordinary industrial companies shows why the Dow and the Nasdaq can tell very different stories.

Netflix and SpaceX report after the close, so the earnings test is not over.

Why Are Oil Prices Above $100 Again? Iran Threatens Undersea Cables

Oil is climbing again, and the reason this time reaches beyond the gas pump.

U.S. crude rose about 2% to roughly $100.78 a barrel and Brent hovered above $110 after an Iranian Revolutionary Guard spokesman threatened to target the undersea communication cables in the Strait of Hormuz.

It is a threat, not an attack, but traders are treating it as one more reason supply could stay tight.

Oil at $100 feeds straight into gasoline, diesel and the cost of shipping almost everything, which keeps inflation, and interest rates, higher for longer.

Whether or not the cables are ever touched, the threat alone is helping keep oil above $100.

US Budget Deficit Hits $1.99 Trillion: Why Interest Costs Matter to You

There is a number in the government’s books that should worry anyone who borrows money.

The Treasury reported a $1.992 trillion budget deficit for fiscal year 2026, and the government spent $1.052 trillion on net interest alone, more than the $965 billion it spent on national defence.

Mark Zandi of Moody’s Analytics warned of a coming “fiscal reckoning”, saying investors are demanding higher rates and that higher rates could feed a vicious cycle of ever more debt.

That is part of why the 10-year Treasury yield, which sets the tone for mortgage rates, is still near 5.1%, and why housing starts fell 5.2% in September.

The Fed meets October 28, with traders betting on a hold, but it does not set the government’s borrowing bill.

The Market Is Splitting Into Winners and Losers. The Early Money Has Already Picked.

Industrials rallied while AI stocks wobbled, oil jumped on a threat to the internet itself, and the government’s interest bill topped its defence budget, and by the time a shift like this feels obvious, the early money has usually already moved.

That is why we created The $5 Trillion Signal, a free report that shows you, in plain English, the five technologies where serious money is flowing right now, who is backing each one, and the early signals worth watching before the crowd catches on.

It lands in your inbox instantly, so you can read it tonight while it is still early.
