If last week’s tech selloff left a dent in your 401(k), this morning gave some of it back.
Markets move fast, so we have picked the three stories that matter most for your savings: the rebound and who is driving it, Michael Saylor’s latest bitcoin purchase, and China’s growth report.
Let’s start with the bounce, and whether it can last.
Why Is the Stock Market Rebounding Today? Traders Buy the Dip in AI Stocks
After the Nasdaq’s worst week since June, bargain hunters are back.
The Nasdaq 100 climbed about 1.4% as a gauge of chip giants jumped 2.3%, after the Nasdaq Composite lost 4.5% last week and ended a four-week winning streak.
Intel gained about 5% on an analyst upgrade and CoreWeave rose after Goldman Sachs told clients to buy it, while the S&P 500 rose about 0.5% and the Dow edged lower, a sign the rally is mostly tech.
A dip buyer is simply someone who buys after a price drop betting it will recover, and for anyone with a tech-heavy retirement account, one good Monday does not erase a 4.5% weekly loss.
Meta’s earnings this week will show whether the AI trade has its footing back.
Why Is Michael Saylor Buying More Bitcoin? Strategy Adds 267 BTC
While most traders were chasing chips, Michael Saylor kept doing what he always does.
His company, Strategy, bought another 267 bitcoin last week for about $22 million, lifting its total to a record 848,517 coins, more than 4% of the entire supply.
It paid for it by selling its own shares, and spent nearly nine times as much, $193 million, buying back its own preferred stock.
At roughly $82,500 a coin, Strategy’s holdings are worth about $6 billion more than it paid, a gain of about 9%.
Strategy is effectively a stock that holds bitcoin, so when it keeps buying, it signals confidence, but it also depends on investors willing to keep buying its shares.
It was a small purchase by Strategy’s standards, but it was the fourth week in a row.
How Fast Is China’s Economy Growing? Q3 GDP Beats Forecasts at 4.5%
China’s economy grew faster than expected, but the headline hides a lopsided picture.
Third-quarter growth came in at 4.5%, beating the 4.4% economists expected and up from 4.3% in the second quarter, which was the weakest in about three years.
That keeps the economy on track for Beijing’s 4.5% to 5% target, powered by strong exports, while retail sales rose only 1.1% in September and the statistics bureau itself says domestic demand is still insufficient.
China is the world’s second-largest economy, so a spurt built on exports rather than shoppers means more Chinese goods heading abroad, and it gives Beijing less reason to rush out big stimulus.
A strong headline with weak household spending is a pattern worth watching.
