We love helping students that are following their passion. Here is the story of Kirstie from Buckinghamshire New University.
As many nursing students, Kirstie struggled to make ends meet with only her bursary. Kirstie is very ambitious and has clear goals of where she wants to be in the future. We are proud to support her along the way.
I was born in the United States, but my mum was from the United Kingdom initially and she used to take me here to visit and I fell in love with the country, as did my step dad. When I finished high school in 2007, we lived in Cardiff together for a few years and I spent most of those years working at various jobs and travelling in order to find out who I wanted to be.
I always knew that I wanted a career that just involved helping people. At first I wanted to be a firefighter, then a policeman and I also seriously considered teaching because I adore kids (in particular for children with special needs). I had never considered nursing until four years ago because my grandmother used to be a nurse and she would tell me that all she did was wipe bums for people and bring them their meals. This image in my head never sat well with me, even though I had so much respect for her, I wanted to do more to help people. About 4 years ago, I realised that students could study paediatric nursing from the start and I knew instantly it was for me and rang my mum.
- How did you come across Future Finance and why did you choose us?
I remember seeing a Facebook ad a few times and I would read through the comments to see what others were saying. I had try to get an increase in my overdraft originally through my bank but it was always unsuccessful. They were never very helpful in understanding how much I was struggling financially, especially during placement times. The travel costs going between High Wycombe and London cost a fortune daily and although us students get our transportation costs refunded, we had to be able to spend £100+ per week just on travel alone so you need to have a lot of money saved up before you can even begin. I started researching more into future finance and I really liked what I saw. From the first time I spoke to a member of the team, they were incredibly understanding and supportive which I never got from my bank whom I have been with for almost 10 years.
- How did you find our customer service and experience?
The customer service was very straight forward and everybody that I spoke to through telephone or email was extremely friendly and helpful. I never had a bad experience with any advisor.
- What makes Future Finance different to other finance providers?
I like future finance because it’s aimed specifically at students and there is a great understanding in the company of how student finances are never enough to fully support you. Mine, for instance barely covers my rent and leaves me with hardly any funds for food. When fees come up for anything else, I wouldn’t be able to cover them until I got my loan from future finance. Future Finance also gives me that opportunity to not have to kill myself with another job in the spare time. I currently have a job as a health care worker but I try to only work only once a week otherwise it would just be too much.
- Why did you choose Buckinghamshire New University and how are you finding your course?
I went to different university open days and attended interviews at various institutions across London. None of them felt right, however. The support given at Bucks is incredible and it’s what made me attached. The lecturers and the rest of the staff treat you as an individual and not just a number. At Bucks there is always someone to help.
The course itself is usually always stimulating. There are of course always going to be some dry modules at every university, but it’s the foundation of nursing and therefore needs to be understood well before moving on to the more interesting ones.
- What advice would you give to someone looking to start a nursing degree?
It is an extremely difficult course but the rewards make everything worthwhile. The most important thing is to be able to control your stress; never let it control you because it can manifest into mental health issues or make existing mental health issues out of control. Recognise when you need help and don’t be afraid or ashamed to ask for it. It can come in many different forms from counselling, a GP or even an approachable tutor. You have to be willing to ask for help because anything can happen. But for this reason you need to choose a university that makes you feel like a person and not just a number. You will need support and you will be able to feel on your interview days whether or not that institution can support you so listen to your instincts. If support coincides with your determination, you will make it through to the end.
- What’s your ambition for the future?
I would love to be a school nurse because my passion lies in safeguarding. I used to think the school nurse just sat in a little office all day and patched up the children that came, but usually that is the first aider. The school nurse gets to meet with children and teenagers on protection programs and has an opportunity to empower them and make them realize how much capability they have and how strong they are. Some of these young people have gone through horrors unimaginable but having that opportunity to make them feel that they are worth more than they think is what I am excited about facing. It will be a real challenge and I know the outcome will not always be paved in gold but I have the passion and determination to not give up. Additionally I thrive when working in fast paced environments so I will also be working as a (very part time) paediatric A&E nurse.
